Hugyawan Festival in Dumaguete City to feature ‘carnivals of the world’

Negrenses can look forward to a unique display of global street dancing this month as the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) in Dumaguete City prepares to roll out its Hugyawan Festival on Dec. 3, 2011. Joy Perez, NORSU information officer, said this year’s Hugyawan will feature the various carnivals of the world.

“This is to show a spectacular parade of colorful costumes, festivities, humorous gimmicks and merrymaking in the streets of Dumaguete,” said Perez.

Hugyawan, a Cebuano word taken from “hugyaw” or revelry, is the annual festival held to culminate NORSU’s Founder’s Day celebration.

The festival this year will mark the 84th Founder’s Day of the only state university in Negros Oriental, the activities of which will start from Nov. 28.

Dr. Peter Dayot, overall chair for this year’s Hugyawan celebration, said each competing contingent from the university’s colleges and departments will present a certain carnival being celebrated by a particular country.

Perez said a total of 14 contingents are set to dance on the streets during the Hugyawan.
Said contingents with the carnival and country they will represent are the following: Sakela Festival (Nepal) – College of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy & Allied Health Sciences; Carnivaldel Pueblo (London) – College of Business & Accountancy; Sinulog de Cebu (Philippines) – Siaton Campus; Masskara (Philippines) – College of Maritime Education; Grand Cañao –Adivay Festival (Philippines) – College of Industrial Technology; GOA Carnival (India) – Mabinay Campus; El Callao Carnival (Venezuela) – College of Agriculture & Forestry; Carnival of Venice (Italy) – College of Education; Carnival de Baranquilla (Colombia) – College of Engineering & Architecture; Cardinal de Nice (France) – Guihulngan Campus; Carnival de Oruro (Bolivia) – Bayawan- Sta. Catalina Campus; Royaume enchate de la France / Varikai Festival (France) -Bais City Campuses 1&2; Carnival del Rio (Brazil) – College of Tourism & Hospitality Management; and Caribbean Carnival (Trinidad and Tobago) – College of Arts & Sciences.
